The goal of the LHIC Afterschool Literacy Program is to assist with improving the reading levels of those Hursey Elementary students (K-5) that reside in the Liberty Hill Community. We will accomplish our goal by creating a program that will reinforce the information and training that the students receive during the regular school hours. We believe this approach will serve the students, the parents and the teachers.
The Liberty Hill Improvement Council (LHIC) Education Endowment Fund Committee in conjunction with Hursey Elementary School.
The Liberty Hill Improvement Council, a 501©3 Non Profit organization, developed the Afterschool Literacy Program initiative to assist the Charleston County School District with its desire to eradicate illiteracy among the students of Charleston County.
The LHIC Afterschool Literacy Program will operate Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We will provide transportation from Hursey Elementary to the Felix Pinckney Community Center. During the three hour period each afternoon, students will be given the instruction and guidance needed to improve their reading skills. A healthy snack will also be provided.
Each student’s reading level will be documented at the beginning of the program and assessed periodically throughout the program and presented to the parents along with recommendations for parental involvement to ensure that each student is making the expected improvements. The LHIC is committed to helping bridge the gap between the teachers and the parents.
The LHIC Afterschool Literacy Program will be headed up by an Executive Director. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring that each student is given the time and attention necessary to improve their reading skills. He/She will accomplish this by identifying and securing student volunteers from our neighboring colleges and universities. We will also seek the help of former and current educators from the surrounding communities as well. The expected outcome is to maintain an appropriate student teacher ratio.
Materials and InstructionalPrograms
The LHIC Afterschool Literacy Program will utilize the same materials and programs that are being utilize at Hursey Elementary School. The purpose is to reinforce those efforts being taught at the school and not to give the students additional methodology thereby confusing the student and the parent.
Cost and Management of the Program
The LHIC Afterschool Literacy Program will be funded by the LHIC Education Endowment Fund. We are in the process of finalizing our budget for the next school year and we will be securing funds through the various education grants and donations from our local sponsors and supporters. We do not anticipate requiring any funding from the Charleston County School District.
